Transfer Information Enhancement with a 2-D Tactile Stimulator Array for an Acoustic Vision Substitute System
نویسندگان
چکیده
Existing vision substitute systems have insufficient spatial resolution to provide environmental information. To present detailed spatial information, we propose two stimulation methods to enhance transfer information using a 2-D tactile stimulator array. First, stimulators are divided into several groups. Since each stimulator group is activated alternately, the interval of stimulations can be shortened to less than the twopoint discrimination threshold. In the case that stimulators are divided into two and four groups, the number of stimulators increases to twice and four times, respectively, that in the case of the two-point discrimination threshold. Further, a user selects the measurement range and the system presents targets within the range. The user acquires spatial information of the entire measurement area by changing the measurement range. This method can accurately present a range of targets. We examine and confirm these methods experimentally. key words: vision substitute system, tactile, acoustic, hybrid method, human interface

In previous work, we have proposed a dynamic, interactive system for conveying visual information via hearing and touch. The system is implemented with a touch screen that allows the user to interrogate a two-dimensional (2-D) object layout by active finger scanning while listening to spatialized auditory feedback. Sound is used as the primary source of information for object localization and i...

Information obtained from multiple sensory modalities, such as vision and touch, is integrated to yield a holistic percept. As a haptic approach usually involves cross-modal sensory experiences, it is necessary to develop an apparatus that can characterize how a biological system integrates visual-tactile sensory information as well as how a robotic device infers object information emanating fr...

Retinal prostheses have the potential to restore some level of visual function to the patients suffering from retinal degeneration. In this paper, an epiretinal approach with active stimulation devices is presented. The MEMS-based processing system consists of an external micro-camera, an information processor, an implanted electrical stimulator and a microelectrode array. The image processing ...
متن کاملThe Tactile Array Stimulator
A I3-element tactile array stimulator has been developed for research into the spatial-response properties of cortical neurons in the finger areas of the somatosensory cortex, the region of the cerebrum that receives and processes the somatic senses (touch, temperature, and pain). The tactile array consists of precision limited-motion, linear-displacement motors that are individually controlled...
